Round 3 Match Reports - Blackdog Round
Updated: May 3
In what was a big day for the club in our annual Black Dog round against Dederang Mount Beauty, the boys were eager to bounce back from last week's loss. Unfortunately, Dederang got the jump right from the start and outplayed us in every area of the game for 4 quarters. Down on rotations throughout the day the boy's battled extremely well with no bench for almost 3 quarters. Berto, Marshall, Ando, Marmo and Jarvo were constant work horses around the ground throughout the day. Luke Hawkins played well for his first game for the club and is going to be a valuable addition to our side going forward. We will look to bounce back against Mitta up in the hills this week.
Goals: J. Anderson-clarke, Z. Warren-Marmo, T. Allan
Best players: L. Marshall, J. Anderson-Clarke, L. Hawkins, J. Berto, C. Jarvis, Z. Pleming.
With the annual Black Dog round being such an important day in the Saints calendar, it was imperative we had the whole playing group as one. Starting the day off in the middle of the field, with all the boys taking a knee and then linking arms with an unbreakable bond, set the tone for what was to be a win due to courage and mateship.
Our Captain Kenny Dube, showed incredible heart (leading by example), allowing Vice Captain Benny Walton, the honour of leading the boys onto the field and tossing the coin. This gesture, displayed our true commitment to everything the Black Dog round stands for.
With the backline under pressure from a tall Dederang forward line, the boys worked on their match ups and stayed strong. First gamer Callum Neil showed his versatility and Benny Walton, wore his heart on his sleeve, sticking up for his mates. Michael White was as strong as ever and Will Simpson played with guts and determination.
In the mid field, Jimmy Ryan playing his 100th game, was unstoppable. VB played an outstanding game and gathered touches wherever he was on the field.
In the forward line, Tom Hynes came to life in the second half and kicked 4, whilst 50 gamer Ethan Barry, stood up when it counted. Walshy was a tackling machine and constantly found the ball.
So after an emotional day for many, as coaches we are not only proud of the win, but the manner in which the boys honored the memory of Brodie and stood up in the fight against the Black Dog.
Goals: T Hynes 4, L Verbaan (VB) 2, L Milgate 2, J Ryan 1, M White 1, C Neil 1
Best: J Ryan, VB, A Walsh, M White, W Simpson, T Hynes
Our mighty midgets had their first win on Saturday 17-3 against Dederang. With 10 out of our 11 players available we were able to give the girls a chance to play different positions on the court with lots of versatility shown by all players. The girls had great defensive pressure down the court and our shooters combined well in the circle to shoot confidently.
AWARDS: Emma Vardy for her accurate shooting, Ava Skrypczak for a great game in the midcourt and Isla Skrypczak also for her shooting accuracy and movement in the goal circle. Well done to all players!
13’s & Under:
13’s played a great game. They played well as a team and moved the ball down the court beautifully. They worked on set plays we worked on on Thursday at training and enjoyed their game. Best on court went to Tahnee who shot beautifully and moved in the circle with grace. Second went to Millie who usually plays in mid court but held her own in the defence end with taking some beautiful intercepts and third went to Dakota who played in mid court and fed the goalers with ease and was always there for support.
15’s & Under
U15s had another near perfect performance on Saturday. I know we have things to work on but it’s great to see them putting our game plans into action. The ball flowed freely through the mid court and again, our shooters never disappointed. Carla Vogelsang proved she was a formidable player to keep an eye on in mid court both defensively and attack wise, which saw her come away with our BOC. Awards could have went to anyone this week so it was very hard to choose. Emily Jennings warmed into the game and started blocking out her player and getting lots of rebounds. Emily also got an award followed by Holly Plunkett who shot at a very high percentage but also proved her worth in the mid court. Special mentions to Maia who ran all day and put on the pressure out in front of the defensive circle and also Savannah who put on the WA bin and proved shooters can feed a circle with ease. Can’t wait to see what we can do in Eskdale next week. Well done girls.
18’s & Under
Our second game saw us taking home an amazing win! The girls have been working hard on their fitness, defence and attacking skills for weeks and it just looks amazing on court watching it all come together. The whole team played a strong game and worked as a team. An incredible bunch of girls and as a coach could not ask for anymore! An outstanding effort from our shooters once again. Sophie and Vardy were on fire nailing the shots left, right and centre. Defence picked up their game this week and got those feet working. Charlotte Harris smashing it and picking off plenty of balls in defence. Charlotte has worked super hard and it’s showing. Mid court worked hard all game, awesome feeding drives and defence from AJ on the wing and the constant hassle.
Awards were hard but was an amazing team effort.
Best: Sophie, Charlotte H & Steph
C grade had another great win on the weekend. Both team came out strong in the first quarter but as the game went on c grade found their rhythm and momentum and was able to to get a comfortable lead and maintain it. There was great defensive pressure down the court plus beautiful connections with our mid court and shooters. Awards went to Rebecca Barry for her effort in GA and Sarah Harry for strong defence.
B Grade B grade started out strong displaying accurate shooting and strong defence. Our midcourt worked beautifully , and lots of positive talk could be heard. Unfortunately our opposition had a strong three quarter and we were unable to recover the lead. Best on went to Kaly smith for an outstanding game. From directing the play to strong defensive pressure. Second Award went to Romni feltwell who displayed her strength and team work in the shooting circle. Well done ladies.
A Grade The girls started a little slow in the first quarter but peeled it back i the following quarter. Our defence end with Taylor/Keely and Robyn is working so well and couldn’t fault them. Our mid court still needs a little work and will continue to improve each week. Our goal circle is working well and having fantastic goalers makes it easy. We had to work hard this weekend as dederang never gave up the whole game. We will take the win but it wasn’t pretty so back to hard work this week.
Best: Taylor and Keely for their hard work in defence
