Round 1 Match Report
Updated: May 24
We start round 1 with congratulating Hannah Gilmore on her 50th game, Zac MacDonald playing his 100th game, and Craig Jarvis on playing his brilliant 200th Game. Congratulations to all 3 players on playing there milestone games for the Wodonga Saints we are all so very proud of you all !!
The midgets continue to improve their skills every week and are working hard on putting these into practice each game. Our game against Beechworth was a big team effort, at times with every player touching the ball in its transition from defence to our goal ring and resulted in a 19-10 win. The girls are working hard to make space on the court and drive to the ball each week which is pleasing to see. Well done to Ajla Grubisa who won an award for her drives to the ball in the centre court and working hard on clearing out and offering for the ball again. Our second award went to Ava Skrypczak who played a confident attacking game in shooting and then helped our younger players in the centre court gaining many intercepts. Well done to all players on a fantastic game.
13’s & Under
Such a gorgeous day in Beechworth for us to take the court. The girls were set a goal early in the game to make 50 goals and they didn’t disappoint! Piper, Tahnee and Emily all did their part in shooting positions. Our defence was also strong keeping the bush rangers at bay, leading to a final score of 52:4. Best on court was Dakota O’Brien (Effies’s Take-Away voucher) for the impressive improvement we see each week. Next was Sophia Kotzur (Rock’n’Roll Roast Voucher) for her stellar effort in GD. Keep up the great work girls going forward against some tough competition.
15’s & Under
The girls got off to a great start getting quick ball into Holly who finished well. Mid court seemed to struggle a little once we met our attack end but after asking them to control the play and talk it down the court I think we settled in nicely. Mia Jefferson was a standout in GA. Shooting a nice amount at a high percentage. She walked away with BOC followed up by Holly who proved to be a pest also defensively winning some ball back. Renee Vardy proved that she’s a versatile player and willingness to give anything a go. Without Jada this week, I pushed Renee into C for a half to rest Carla and it turned out to be a great combo. Both finding circle edge and patience on the feed. Maia showed me that I have a team full of shooters, finally getting her chance in the attack circle and not disappointing. All girls did a great job but of course there’s always things to improve on. At the end of the day, we walked away with a comfortable win. Congratulations girls.
18’s & Under
Another fantastic win by the girls. It wasn’t our best played game but we still gave it what we had left in the tank after a big game last week. With a different line up due to injuries it saw AJ dominate the mid court section in WA and C. Strong shooting from our combos and great work it defence. Best on AJ & Sophie
This week against Beechworth we slightly mixed up our attacking and defensive combinations throughout the court to work on strengthen our combination options as we have with such versatile team.
We knew that Beechworth would be fighting for a win and that we just had to stick to our game. As a team we became a little frazzled at times and intensity dropped though the team were able pick themselves up and get the job done. Defence worked hard as they always do creating many turnovers. In the attacking end we were at times lost with new combinations but kept building and started to look more comfortable as the game went.
Best on went to Lizzy Tui, who had her first game in GS and absolutely owned that position after spending the season mid court. Second awards went to Alex who strengthen her game defensively by taking in the advice I gave her off court and completely shut down her player. This win brings us to 2nd on the ladder, so it will be a great game next week when we take on Thurgoona who are on top.
Wow, such a nail biting game. Each and every one of b grade, had a stellar game today. Strong defence and attacking. Especially considering the new line up today. You all kept calm under pressure, showed amazing spirit, team work and it was simply a joy to watch. Awards: Best on went to Tori wright for outstanding work in defence. 2nd award went to Amy Baker who stepped up and had her best game. 3rd award went to Kristal Slade who smashed it WA you did what was asked of you and made your presence know. Well done ladies.
What a game. Hats off to Beechworth if they keep this team and grow they will be unstoppable. Our defence end as normal were tight and taking in intercepts all through the goal end. Mid court still need work to get the ball to circle edge and not force passes in. But the girls second quarter nailed it for us. Our girls in the circle were easily seen and made it easy for midcourt to feed the ball. The circle did a great job we still need to work on movement. With Jayde hitting the ground pretty heavily with an ankle sprain she will be out a week which will make things a little difficult this weekend coming into Thurgoona. But we should still have a full team. Best on court went to Taylor Morey who was everywhere on the court. Second went to Robyn who just took the WA out of the game. So super proud of the girls.
Reserves vs Beechworth
This was always going to be a great contest with both sides sitting on 3 wins and 3 losses and battling for 5th spot on the ladder. We came out looking really strong with a near perfect start, centre clearance into the forward line and goal all within a minute. The response from Beechworth came 90 seconds later when they hit the board with a major. From there we struggled all day to match the pace of a younger and fitter outfit and let ourselves down with some poor decisions and execution. Zac Mcdonald had a fantastic 100th club game and fought hard all day showing the true passion and commitment we want from our players, sorry we couldnt get you the win Zac. Moves were made all over the ground to try and keep us in the game and get back on top but it just wasn't to be our day.
Goals: T. Dempsey 3, H. Witt, G. Cadman, G. Roberts, D. Brom Best Players: Z. Mc Donald, T. Rowney, A. Walsh, M. White, T. Dempsey, B. Easton
Seniors vs Beechworth Match Report:
Coming up against Beechworth who were in a similar boat to us as we knew if we weren't on our game from the start, that it could potentially be a tough day at the office. Indeed it was a tough day as Beechworth clearly came to play as they got on top of us from the word go. Fortunately enough the boy's were able to respond in the last 10 minutes of the first half where we were able to completely change the momentum of the game and get it back onto our terms. Start of the 3rd quarter we were able to control the game but couldn't quite capatilise on our opportunities going forward continually turning the footy over deep in our forward line. We went into the last leading but once again we fell short at the final siren as Beechworth out worked us when it mattered most. We will learn from this and will continue to work hard on the areas of our game that need improving. Huge congratulations on Craig Jarvis on playing his 200th club game. Tremendous loyalty shown over the years and has been a magnificent servant to our great club. Well done Jarvo.
